Who Will Be New York’s Next Coquito Master? Find Out This Saturday
This Saturday, December 14, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. the Coquito Masters™ will hold the “2013 Coquito Masters Finals” during which the top coquito makers throughout the state will compete for the title of New York’s supreme Coquito Master. The finals will take place at the Andrew Freedman Mansion, located at 1125 Grand Concourse (between 166th and 167th St.) in the Bronx, NY.
Founded by Deborah Quinones in 2001, the Coquito Masters Contest is an annual competition where contestants prepare a gallon of their best coquito to be judged for taste, color, consistency, texture and “kick”. Qualifying events have occurred throughout New York and expanded for the first time this year to Boston, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The Coquito Masters series – including the annual Three Kings Day Coquito Crawl – has become one of New York’s most celebrated cultural holiday festivities.
During the finals, culinary experts are invited to determine the winner from the top three contestants that have been voted on by the attendees. Past guest judges include Chef, Author, and Host of PBS’ “Daisy Cooks” Daisy Martinez, The Culinary Institute of America’s Nilsa Rodriguez, former Gracie Mansion Chef Filoberto Estevez, and Cooking Channel TV’s Chef Baron Ambrosia. This year’s judges are Chef Flora Montes, Chef John Denizard, and Chef and Cookbook Author Julio Rodriguez. Saturday’s event will be free and open to the public.
Coquito, the traditional Puerto Rican holiday beverage, is often referred to as Puerto Rican eggnog for its flavorful mix of coconut, condensed milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and rum. Said Quinones, “The Coquito Masters contest series is a celebration of culture and coquito. We are searching for coquito that is balanced where the coconut flavor is not overpowered by the alcohol.”
