A woman’s trek to find the best jerk in LA

Since moving here last summer I’ve admittedly been slower than usual in exploring Los Angeles’ vast culinary landscape. Between getting acclimated to a new home, building a new business, and of course (lots of) writing, the past six months have practically been a blur. Finally, at the insistence of a friend — who’s own delicious dishes will be gracing the pages of Off The Beaten Plate very soon — I went out this weekend in search of LA’s top Caribbean food spot, paying no mind to the 35-minute trip each way. After all, good grub is worth traveling for, right?

My destination: Wi Jammin Caribbean Restaurant (www.wi-jammin.com), located at 5103 West Pico Boulevard in West LA. Braving thick Saturday afternoon traffic, I arrived with only one thing on my mind: their succulent and spicy Jerk Chicken, perhaps one of the establishment’s most popular dishes. Let me tell you, I was hardly disappointed as theirs was hands down the best Jerk Chicken I’ve had in recent years.  In a bout of professed poultry overload I also ordered the Jamaican Fried Chicken (great googa-mooga) and the chicken patty which, to my surprise, tasted hot and fresh, a novelty in most cases. And what’s a West Indian dining experience without some ox-tails seasoned and slowly-cooked to perfection?

The prices at Wi Jammin’ are pretty average to boot and commensurate to the amount of food you’re given. If ordering for two a single combination platter contains more than enough food to share, particularly for those dining on a dime. Need a delicious drink to counteract that spicy Jerk? Try out their homemade Pineapple Ginger Juice and/or Honey Punch which, incidentally, was sold out when I went. As such, be sure to plan ahead and call-in your order earlier in the day before all of the quick selling items (i,e. beverages, patties, or plantains) run out.

In all, the entire experience already has me planning another trip one day this week. If you’re new to LA or will be coming to town soon, bookmark this post and add Wi Jammin’ to your “to eat” list.
